Design for Social Innovation

“Design for social innovation is everything that expert design can do to activate, sustain, and orient processes of social change toward sustainability” – Ezio Manzini, 2015 –

This project came about a collaboration between Malmö University and FramtidensHus, a public citizen service that encompasses different civil society groups with the basic aim of addressing the needs of Lindängen, a vulnerable community facing complex societal problems.
Together with three fellow interaction design students, using a participatory design approach, we developed three projects which speak into FramtidensHus work on different levels.

The Mapping Tool

The complex social structure in which FramtidensHus operates become the inspiration for the design of the Mapping Tool, a 3 meter wide cork panel with movable pieces, hung in the FramtidensHus office. This project aims to support FramtidensHus’s infrastructuring work.

The Mapping Tool materializes the complex landscape of actors operating in the area and their mutual relationship, in a fine grain scale. The design is the result of a series of workshops we organised, in which different actors mapped their social landscape of Lindängen and previous projects that took place in the area. Beside being a precious moment for understanding the context and initiating a discussion about the stakeholder’s need, these workshops also gave us the opportunity to build trust with the stakeholders. Through open dialogue and transparent process, all the ideas were discussed and planned together with FramtidensHus stakeholders.

The Mapping Tool consist of wooden elements which shape represents different categories, such as people, associations, physical spaces and assets. The choice to create a tangible map, rather than a digital one, was motivated by the double need of being accessible to everyone in the building and becoming a shared tool for the planning of new activities. By envisioning new connections between different actors/resources, for instance, the team could brainstorm and plan novel activities.


The Oven

One of the needs expressed by FramtidensHus was to improve the communication of its services to a broader public and get in contact with the community. This has been carried out in the past through the organisation of different activities, such as barbecues, loppis, artistic intervention, etc. Inspired by such activities, we organised an event during which we built a DIY pizza oven. In addition to create an opportunity for people to come together, the Oven aimed to address the issue of safety by inviting people to appropriate the space they inhabit.


The Timeline


The last project was the creation of a collaborative webpage that could work as a repository of the multiple projects that take place in Lindängen. During our research we realized that ours was only one of several collaborations between FramtidensHus and educational institutions.
We therefore identified an opportunity for creating a platform where knowledge could be passed over and shared across institutions. This inspired the creation on the Timeline: In Lindängen with Lindängen.

The Timeline sum up our work in Lindängen, organised around milestones and providing a final account with reflection upon the process.
